High Castle "Spirit of the West" Review

High Castle, the band that I play guitar and sing for has just released it's debut full length, "Spirit of the West". Zum records, run by our friend George Chen, has been a huge supporter of the band and has had 540 copies pressed onto super hi quality thick vinyl. This ain't no left over from the '70s conserve yr oil era shit. It has also been slated for release for the itunes store as well (though, the vinyl version comes with a download code). High Castle went into the studio November 2010 to record the 11 tracks that are on this album. It was recorded and mixed by Jacob Felix Heule. I will have to say that, even though the recording put a huge dent in our collective pockets, Jacob was grossly underpaid for all the phenomenal work that he did. The sound of this record will forever be in debt to him. The front cover was designed by... um, me and the back cover features a painting by the art-collab "Club Paint" (Erin Allen, Keith Boadwee and Isaac Gray) of which you have seen many photos of on this blog web world shindig.

We (High Castle), will be touring the United States for the entire month of September playing our favorite songs from "Spirit of the West", our ep "You're on Your Own Way" and a handful of new songs that we have been working on since our last visit to the studio.

We are also having a record release// tour kick off show in our drummer's apartment, dubbed "Jam City" in West Oakland on 7th street just 2 blocks from West Oakland Bart. my favorite song this summer is by the bay area band Raw War. "Somebody Told Me Not To"

I ate a McDonalds burger for the first time in maybe 10+ years while on the road with High Castle. It was very SOFT. I fell in love with Toyota vans and the Tres Hombres album by ZZ Top.

SF Weekly wrote up a review on High Castle's performance at 21 Grand this past saturday.

Keith Boadwee, Isaac Gray and I are back at it again with the oil paint for our show in New Orleans in November. Soon there will be separate website documenting that work.

No Burden, No Guilt has not seen an "issue" in a couple of years. So, to make up for the lack of output, this one is going to be nearly 70 pages in girth and have 4 color screen printed covers. From the initial rough test copies a few pages have to be resized (because this issue actually uses the written word! *gasp!*) and the covers have to be reprinted by me because of an oversight that I did... however, I am using the process to learn about correct registration for an extremely ambitious project I have planned in the next couple of months. I will no doubt enlist the advice of printing guru friends Dan, Paul and John respectively.

White Room #1: Eric Allen / Keith Boadwee / Isaac Gray

White Columns is pleased to present the first New York exhibition of collaborative paintings by California-based artists Eric Allen, Keith Boadwee and Isaac Gray. Installed in a dense ‘salon’ style, creating an immersive and claustrophobic environment, Allen, Boadwee, and Gray’s White Room exhibition comprises more then 40 oil on canvas paintings produced over the past year. Invoking a legacy of more then a half century of ostensibly ‘bad’ painting, a slippery category whose genealogy might include Magritte’s Period Vache, Asger Jorn’s peinture détourné, Otto Muehl’s painterly provocations, 1970s era works by Neil Jenny, the post-punk painters of the East Village scene, and maverick figures such as Albert Oehlen, Martin Kippenberger, and Jiri Georg Dokoupil, amongst others, Allen, Boadwee, and Gray’s works are informed and united by a kinship and attitude that remains decidedly idiosyncratic. Their works are by turn scatological, caustic, sardonic, and strangely sincere. In a manifesto-like statement Allen, Boadwee, and Grey address something of the impetus and motivations behind their collective endeavor:

“Standing alone against the world is not only futile and fruitless but overly romanticized, as well. Selfish pursuits are ultimately self-destructive. Communal ones can be too, but the myth of the self-destructive artist - that you have to suffer for Art - We have always had an aversion to this idea.
We work together making paintings. Our work is about The Cult, The Brotherhood and The Secret Society of painters. It is about exchanging information, sharing knowledge and how that information is then assimilated, altered and tweaked by each of us. The paintings are about sex and drugs and rock and roll and life and death and nature. They are about having fun with friends. They are metaphors for The Primal Scream.”

Child Pornography split 12" with Quem Quaeritis

So I was doing some ego-trippin tracking down reviews of projects etc when I found this link: http://www.mediafire.com/?zmd2oewlgz5 its a link to a zipped file of our 12" with Quem Quaeritis on Not Not Fun Records (the first 9 songs are by child pornography and those that follow are by Q.Q.). Issued on see-through green vinyl in an edition of 300. But hey how many more than 20 people would actually want this record right? The music on this record is the first recording project of the Brizah/Erin lineup of Child Pornography. N. Grimey had just left the band and we were still figuring out how the band can be a duo again so the songs are mostly songs we hardly played live because I filled in extra keyboard parts or they were just written as they were recorded or written for a record-- which is really 75 percent of the recorded output of this band. anyhow, reason I am posting this is because alot of our friends like the new full length tape we put out on HSA tapes... in my opinion it is why we were still a band. whatever- i like it. But this is an album that is of similar value that is not well known about... basically before we could tour again we gave all our copies away to friends and filled the handful of mailorders. The next album that followed was simply all the next round of songs we wrote to play live... but this 12" is truly one those great private bedroom records (in my humble egotistical opinion). I recommend it if you like the new tape. I recommend it on vinyl because its bright and colorful and sounds good but it may be hard to find...but I'm sure you can order a copy straight from Not Not Fun records online-- I'm sure they got copies collecting dust.

Unfortunately, Maniac Gallery from Los Angeles was censored from the Verge art fair in Miami Florida. However, all of the art brought to Miami was re-installed in the back of a rental car. The exhibition culminated with a performance piece entitled "40 oz.'s From Fiefdom", utilizing a 40 oz. bottle of Miller High life, the 80 degree weather, fine sands of Miami beaches and the encroaching realization that the concept of our 'Twilight Years' could be thought of as an overextended Hallmark holiday sham.

Remnants from this show will soon be on exhibit in a hotel room in the Tendorloin district of San Francisco.

I am currently collaborating with Keith Boadwee and Issac Gray. We are working on oil paintings. I will post decent photos of some of the work soon. So far there are slightly over 70 paintings done. There is a show in the works for this collaboration at Steven Wolf Fine Arts in San Francisco CA in January of 2010. No specific date has been set as of yet. Issac Gray and I are currently working on drawings together and we hope to self release a small catalogue of this work as well. stay tuned.

Here are some things that have happened and that are happening in my world:

*I was able to fly my good friend and long time collaborator in the band Child Pornography, Brian, up using credit I obtained from giving up my seat last thanksgiving. We were able to record 17 songs onto our tascam porta 2 machine. We hope to have these songs released soon. *Work, the band that I am in with Sarah Bernat (formerly of 16 bitch pile-up) has a new record out. It is a split 12" record with the band Piles. We are soon departing a U.S. tour in support of its release. It is a self release and we hope to have it picked up by a couple of distributors but you can pick one up at one of our shows coming up. MANIAC presents a collaborative program produced by Bay Area based artists James Bradley and Erin Allen, Novus Taedium Seclorum: New Painting by James Bradley and Erin Allen opening Friday, June 26th. Allen and Bradley actualize a visual re-consolidation of our current social landscape considering the new wave of 'progressionary politics' in the Western World, specifically the United States. Severing over- contextualizing, Allen and Bradley present new painting delivering a surveyed reaction of their world right now while deciding what sphere they belong to as part and parcel of what is described as Generation XYZ: namely the generation of over-cynical, culturally sensitized, commercialists coming of age in the New World, 2009.

In revision is the idea of painting and creating new art for a world that is seemingly more separatist than collective, more isolated than incorporated whilst all visual messages are forcing the contrary. All of this considered, a reconsidered way of living and seeing is necessary in this new landscape to combat the dead-ends of past generational ideologies and the popular side of social conditioning that seeks reform as a marketing campaign effort. In essence, when nothing is considered important and nothing's shocking, anything and everything can be considered precious.

Artist Statement:

As the world around us continues its seeming spiral into chaos and confusion more and more people, in a last-ditch effort to establish a framework for making sense of the senseless, are speculating as to the existence of hidden forces, shadow governments, and secret societies pulling the strings of our lives on a global scale. Amidst this climate of potentially-justified paranoia, a tiny minority of super-rich men in business suits offer up the supposedly reassuring claim that we are heading into a "New World Order," while the vast majority of us sit back and watch it on T.V., powerless to offer any input that will allow us to guide our own collective fate in any meaningful way. Because of the incremental and multi-generational nature of this process, we find ourselves with plenty of time to sit around and be bored in the interim, and some of us have chosen art-making as the preferred antidote to this New World Boredom.

Maniac Gallery is unable to participate in SCOPE's Art Basel in Switzerland.

However, James Bradley and I will be showing a whole lotta new work at Maniac Gallery in Oakland late June. Stay Tuned for an actual date.

Both James Bradley and I are Also part of the group show "Children of the Revolution" currated by Keith Boadwee at the Federal Arts Project in Downtown LA. The opening is on thursday June 11th from 7pm-Midnite. It will be a fucking party.

In other news, Pehr Space in Los Angeles is currently shut down due to noise complaints. High Castle will be working with people involved to make sure we still play an awesome all ages diy venue spot if not another house party show for that date of our west coast tour.

THE MASHUP SHOW takes its cue from David Quantick’s assertion that “pop will eat itself.” Since pop music recycles good ideas continuously, a perfect pop song could be written by combining the best from the best from these ideas into one song. The mashup music genre, a particular echo of this phenomenon, is known for colliding dissimilar songs to create a new work through the encounter. Colliding disparate works physically, The Mashup Show mirrors this logic and investigates the moments of cognitive resonance and dissonance that pervade this type of cultural production. Though mashups maintain clear formal and ideological resonances with musique concrète and Burrough's cut-ups, today, these collisions are increasingly filtered through the arsenal of shareware and software that drive video and varrious web applications. Cultural re-production is at an all time high yielding an ouroboros, that though recursive, does not constitute a closed utopean system. This show aims to examine mashups as a process of layered production that contingently comlicate the cycles of information that construct the cultural spaces we inhabit.

THE MASHUP SHOW was organized by marcella faustini with curatorial advice from the all-around-general-muses and animal handlers of the Nightmare City Council (now offering teenage sleuthing).
